A Uterine Fibroid made the woman look like  24 weeks pregnant

A 38yr old Tina (Name changed) was successfully treated for fibroid at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar. Ms Tina had experienced heavy bleeding while she was doing Zumba at class. Immediately she visited a gynaecologist Dr Surabhi Siddhartha at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar. Tina has 2 kids and she was taking oral contraceptive pills, so she thought the heavy bleeding was due to hormonal changes.

On examination of her abdomen, it was seen that her uterus has grown up to 24-week pregnancy, and hence ultrasound was suggested. 12cm by 10cm large fibroid inside the uterus was diagnosed. She was given a suggestion of myomectomy (removal of fibroid) and hysterectomy(removal of uterus). Tina then left the hospital and did not turn up for a week. Suddenly, after a week she came with a complaint of heavy bleeding for a week. She got admitted at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar and treatment of myomectomy was planned.

Dr Surabhi Siddhartha, Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, says, “On the table it was seen that fibroid was very big with all polypoidal changes and it was filling the whole uterine cavity, so laparoscopic Hysterectomy was performed. Her ovaries were preserved as she is young female just 38 years. She was advised high protein diet. Abdominal exercise and pelvic floor exercise were also recommended. Post-surgery, she is absolutely fine.”

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow on the walls of the uterus. They can grow as single or multiple tumours, and they can range in size from being as small as an apple seed to getting as large as watermelon. The most notable symptom of fibroids is exceptionally heavy bleeding, typically during a woman’s period but potentially outside of that. However, fibroids can also cause pain, frequent urination, constipation, and abdominal swelling. Depending on the case, they can also lead to fertility problems.

“Small fibroids are seen in many women after 30years of age due to hormonal effects. The Fibroid is the growth of muscle layer of uterus due to hormonal changes. But a 12cm fibroid which is almost 24week pregnant size uterus is really uncommon. Every woman should go for annual Gynec check-up and also one ultrasound should be done every year post 30 years of age, so that such big masses are not missed”, added Dr Surabhi Siddhartha.

Tina, Patient says, “I am glad that I approached the right hospital at right time. The team of doctors here counselled me and guided me correctly and I am thankful to them.”
