I had heard about Mrs. Magpie from my friends and the other day after a long search for a nice cafe in the city serving quintessential ‘cafe delectables in an appropriate cafe atmosphere’, I visited this place with my friend. Mrs. Magpie is located in Southern
Avenue, Kolkata. The place has a fairy tale decor where everything from the pillars, walls and doors have been done up in soothing pastel colours. Even the window panes have tinted glasses. Neatly arranged small round tables and wrought iron chairs add on to the cosy atmosphere inside the cafe. My idea of a perfect European cafe is where the menu is scribbled across a blackboard and I was overjoyed to see the same at Mrs. Magpie.
Their cupcake assortments are tempting. The variety and placement of these delectable delights provided are both pleasing to the eyes and the taste buds. My personal favourite were the ‘sweet N salty’ one and ‘marshmallow’ cupcake. The small cakes are soft and the icing is so buttery that it is difficult to be happy with just one.
I also liked their coffee-caramel custard. It had the right balance of the coffee beans and burnt caramel flavour and it melts the moment you put it into your mouth. I did not quite like their marzipan cupcakes maybe because I am not a huge fan of the sugary decorations but must say that the marzipan designs are quite intricate and flawlessly done. They are going to be a big hit among the kids.
I had a grilled bacon and chicken club sandwich which was served with chips. It was really tasty and can be easily shared
between two people. I loved their ham and cheese quiche which was very light and fluffy with the saltiness of the cheese not being overpowering. I, however, felt that they should increase the number of savouries in the menu. It would be nice to see more pot-pies and savoury tarts being served at Mrs. Magpie. Also different kinds of soups with bread rolls would be a nice add-on for the winters.
Overall, this place deserves appreciation for smart thinking and an absolute meticulous execution both on the food and the decor front. It’s a great place to be on a lazy weekend afternoon with a group of friends or just with a good book. Good company, a sip of their coffee and a bite into their cupcakes….aaah! Life’s so good!
